Development and contaminated land

To help developers through the development process, we have produced a guide to submitting planning applications: land contamination (PDF, 447KB). Contact the Contaminated Land team if you need any advice on the process.

Developers are advised to read the Environmental Protection Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) (PDF, 2.2MB) to ensure their proposed development meets planning policy requirements and is designed to minimise the impacts on public health, wellbeing and amenity. The SPD constitutes formal planning guidance and will be taken into account as a material consideration when determining relevant planning applications.

For further information regarding development and contaminated land please visit Planning constraints – contaminated land.

If your development requires some information to be submitted up front, you are advised to contact Development Management for pre-application advice to discuss the exact requirements.

If your development involves a current or former petrol filling station, including small village forecourts, Environmental Protection UK (EPUK) has produced a useful guide for developers and environmental consultants. This can be downloaded free of charge from the CL:AIRE WALL website.

Change of use/prior approval
