Winter HAF

Free holiday activities and food for children most in need this Christmas

19 November 2024

Schoolchildren across Cheshire East will have access to free hot meals and engaging activities throughout the Christmas break.

The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme provided by Cheshire East Council, offers a variety of fun and educational sessions for children across the borough. These sessions, available to children aged 5 to 16, are mainly designed for those eligible for free school meals and include physical activities, arts and crafts, interactive experiences, and a nutritious meal for each participant.

The programme aims to give children a happy and healthy holiday experience, helping them to:

  • be more active;
  • develop and learn;
  • socialise, have fun and be happy;
  • get a tasty nutritious meal;
  • work together and stay safe.

Local schools, holiday clubs, and community organisations will deliver the winter programme, which will run from December 20, 2024, to January 3, 2025.

Cllr Carol Bulman 223x280Councillor Carol Bulman, chair of Cheshire East Council’s children and families committee, said: “Christmas can be a costly time for families and this programme is essential for those who need it most. It provides children with a healthy meal and the opportunity to learn, stay active, socialise, and enjoy their winter break.

“Since 2021, the HAF programme has reached thousands of young people with sessions in arts, sports, cooking, health and wellness, gardening, animal care, and more. The programme is also special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) inclusive with activities available across the borough for young people with SEND. Eligible parents and guardians can browse and book these free activities through the council’s user-friendly booking system.”
