Works on Flag Lane Link in Crewe move to next stage

Works to improve access to Crewe town centre are continuing in May as Cheshire East Council’s Flag Lane Link scheme moves into its next phase.

The works are part of a package of projects being supported by the government’s Future High Streets Fund, following the council’s successful bid for a total of £14.1m of funding.

The Flag Lane Link will significantly improve access to the town centre, reduce congestion and journey times in and out of Crewe by linking Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via Flag Lane. No new traffic lights or street lighting will be introduced as part of the scheme; however, there will also be an upgrade to the current zebra crossing, which is in place on Flag Lane.

Tom Moody, director of highways and infrastructure for Cheshire East Council, said: “We are aware that driver frustration is often a cause of accidents, so these works, together with other travel improvements in Crewe, will have a very positive impact and encourage all road users to access the town more safely.”

Highways works are due to begin on the Flag Lane Link on Monday 15 May with the scheme due for completion in September.

Other travel schemes supported by the Future High Streets Fund have also been approved in Crewe. State-of-the-art junction controls are planned for the Wistaston Road, Edleston Road and Nantwich Road areas, while planning permission was recently granted for the Southern Gateway Pedestrian and Cycling Connectivity Scheme – providing a new pedestrian and cycling link between High Street and the Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
