Buying or renting council land or property

To find out whether you can purchase or rent council land or property complete the enquire about a council property form below. The form will take 5 minutes to complete.

 Enquire about a council property

To find out how we use your information see our privacy notice (opens in a new window).

When we receive your completed enquiry form and plan identifying the land we will:

  • acknowledge your enquiry
  • contact Council services responsible for the land to find out whether it is surplus to their requirements
  • find out if other Council services have an operational requirement for the land

If the land is considered surplus to the Council's requirements the next stages may involve:

  • the title to the land
  • effect on highways
  • the potential and proposed use of the land

It may be some time before your application can proceed further.

Advertising land for sale

The Council advertises land or property surplus to its requirements for sale on the open market to ensure the best price is achieved and any interested party has the opportunity to make an offer. A disposal of land or property may take place through a public auction.

Costs of land and property purchases

It is recommended that you obtain an independent valuation and appropriate advice before making an offer for land or property.

In addition to the purchase price of the land or property, any sale would be conditional on the purchaser being responsible for paying the council's legal and surveyor costs. These costs are calculated on a sliding scale depending on the value of the land or property.
