Non-designated Heritage Assets (including locally listed buildings)

Non-designated Heritage Assets include locally listed buildings and structures of architectural or historic interest; historic parks and gardens, heritage landscapes or areas of archaeological interest.

Local list

Our local list of historic buildings - supplementary planning document (PDF, 6.6MB) contains a list of Non-Designated Heritage Assets in Cheshire East. Buildings marked on conservation area plans as making a positive contribution to the conservation area are also considered to be Non-Designated Heritage Assets. They add to the unique character of Cheshire East, individually and sometimes collectively.

The Cheshire East local list plays an essential role in building and reinforcing a sense of local character and distinctiveness in the historic environment. It identifies significant local heritage assets and offers a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.

This local list is currently being updated as part of a collaborative project with Cheshire West and Chester Council and Halton. If you would like to nominate a building or structure, all information you need to support your nomination can be on the Cheshire Local Heritage List page.

If you would like to discuss your locally listed building, contact a member of the built heritage team.

Submitting a planning application for non designation heritage assets (including local list buildings)

Non-Designated Heritage Assets can be identified by the local planning authority as part of the decision-making process on planning applications. For example, following archaeological investigations, or through neighbourhood plans. The local list of Historic Buildings supplementary planning document (PDF, 6.6MB) sets out criteria, against which buildings will be assessed for local listing, as non-designated heritage assets.

An assessment to determine whether a building, structure, park or landscape is a Non-Designated Heritage Asset, will be required to consider the asset's evidential, historic, aesthetic, and communal value.

Further information on what information will be needed when you submit a planning application can be found within the validation checklist for Heritage.

Your application with reference to the national planning policy framework and local planning policies including:

  • SE1 - Design
  • SE7 – Heritage
  • SE4 – Landscape
  • HER 7- Non designated heritage assets
  • We will also refer to neighbourhood plans
