16-19 Bus Saver

The 16-19 Bus Saver is a new discount scheme for young people aged 16 to 19 who live in Cheshire East. With the pass, you can save a third on adult single fares across all bus services, as long as your journey is within, starts, or ends in Cheshire East.

The 16-19 Bus Saver is part of a 2-year trial led by the Cheshire East Bus Partnership, supported by the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) and funded by the Department for Transport.

How to apply

If you have access to the internet, an email address and you are able to take photos and upload documents, you can apply via the My Bus Pass portal

What you need to supply

For proof of identity and age, you will need to supply one of the following:

  • a valid provisional/full driving licence photocard
  • a valid passport
  • a birth certificate

To complete your application:

  • a clear 'head and shoulders' photograph of yourself that can be used on your bus saver. You can wear your glasses on the photograph as long as there is no glare
  • your email address

What happens next

You should receive your bus pass within 10 working days of making your application.

Further information

The 16-19 Bus Saver offers an additional third off discount on the £2 fare cap, meaning your single bus journey will cost less than £2.

Eligibility for the scheme

Anyone aged 16 to 19 who lives in Cheshire East can apply for the 16-19 Bus Saver. If you move out of Cheshire East but your journey still starts or ends within the borough, you can continue using the pass until it expires.

The pass is valid until the day before your 20th birthday or until 31 October 2026, whichever comes first.

Care leavers

Care leavers aged 18 to 21 living in Cheshire East are eligible for free travel on adult single fares. The free travel pass is valid until the day before your 22nd birthday or until 31 October 2026, whichever comes first.

If you have a disability

While the 16-19 Bus Saver provides a discount on bus fares, there may be other options better suited to those with disabilities, such as a disabled person's bus pass

What services you can use the pass for

The pass is only valid on buses and cannot be used for train or tram travel.

The 16-19 Bus Saver can be used:

  • on all participating bus services as long as the journey is within, starts, or ends in Cheshire East
  • some demand-responsive services, for example, 'go-too'
  • at any time, including evenings and weekends

Check with the bus operator for any specific exclusions and for other demand-responsive transport services.

If you're not sure whether your journey starts or ends in Cheshire East, refer to the map of Cheshire East.

What services you can use the pass for

The charge for a replacement bus pass that has been lost or damaged is £10. Stolen passes will be replaced free of charge on production of a crime number issued by the police.

If the card is in good condition but does not scan, your card can be checked at Macclesfield Town Hall. If the fault is with the chip then a replacement will be issued free of charge.

If you find your original pass after we have issued a replacement, you must return the original pass to the address on the reverse for secure disposal as it will have been cancelled on the system to prevent further use. We cannot issue a refund after a replacement pass has been issued.

You can request a replacement for a lost or damaged bus pass through  the My Bus Pass portal or in person at one of our customer service centres or libraries. Stolen passes can only be replaced at a customer service centre or library.
