Mill House Bridge A523, Adlington

A523 Mill House Bridge, between Adlington and Macclesfield

Following a bridge inspection on Mill House Bridge, Adlington, we need to undertake comprehensive repairs to a collapsed section of the arch that provided support to the southbound traffic lane.

Emergency temporary traffic signals will remain in place between the London Road junction and Hole House Lane until the bridge has been reconstructed and strengthened.

What work is happening

We are undertaking surveys and ground investigations to design and install temporary strengthening to the arch. This will allow the design of the permanent solution to progress.

The collapsed section of the bridge is also adjacent to a 380mm diameter medium-pressure gas main. We must ensure the protection of the gas main whilst undertaking repairs to the bridge

When the work is happening

The complexity of the scheme will mean the road may not be fully re-opened until early summer of 2025. The council understands the importance of this strategic part of the borough network and full resources are allocated to ensure the work is completed as soon as possible.

Further information

  • The temporary lights are necessary to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce whilst we investigate to cause of the collapse.
  • Pedestrian access is unaffected.
  • Cyclist access will be maintained through the traffic lights.
  • Local businesses remain unaffected.
