Station Road, Wrenbury

Drainage Improvement and Carriageway Resurfacing Scheme

We will be replacing and upgrading the drainage system along Station Road, Wrenbury as well as resurfacing the road. The work will take place between the junction of Station Road / Wrenbury Road and to a point where the road crosses the River Weaver.

We have carried out surveys along this section of road which indicated that the existing drainage system can no longer accommodate the existing surface water run off. This has resulted in localised flooding and deterioration of the road and our work will provide essential improvements to the drainage system and road surface. We are working with Network Rail and the Environment Agency to deliver this scheme safely.

When and what is happening

Works to deliver these drainage and road improvements started on 3 June 2024, and will take approximately 15 weeks to complete. The duration of the works is to allow for phasing to help facilitate access to businesses and residents. This is a complex drainage scheme, with an estimated cost for all of the works including the resurfacing of around £1 million. Due to the extensive works that are required, the scheme will take 15 weeks to complete.

The following works will take place:

  • Installation of a new drainage system, including new surface water pipes, road gullies and manholes
  • Installation of a new outfall and headwall at the River Weaver
  • Road resurfacing and improvement works
  • Reinstatement of road markings
  • Kerbing, signage, fencing, hedge replanting, soil and seeding.

Before the work commences, we will continue to monitor Station Road through our programme of routine and ad-hoc safety inspections in line with the council’s Code of Practice for Highway Safety Inspections. Any intervention level defects which are identified will be repaired promptly to keep the road safe ahead of the proposed improvement works.

Progress so far

Works are progressing well and on schedule on our Station Road, Wrenbury scheme. The works will be carried out in 4 phases, with phase 1 now complete.

  • 5 new manholes and 8 new gullies have been installed, along with new kerbing
  • The headwall has been constructed with a natural stone base, and landscaping has been completed at the outfall
  • Fencing has been set up on-site to ensure the safety of the headwall and the highways boundary

We are now moving into phase 2 of the scheme. For further updates as the scheme progresses, follow us on Twitter @CECHighways.

Road closure and diversions routes

Under current Health and Safety legislation and for the safety of our workforce and members of the public, a road closure is in place during these works. Large open excavations will be in place for the installation of new drainage system and it is not safe for members of the public to travel through.

The road closure is in place between the junction of Wrenbury Road / Pinsley Green Road and Nantwich Road. The section of Station Road after the housing development and up until Nantwich Road will be resurfaced at a later date after completion of the development due to maintaining access for the development work. We will be working during the day on all weekdays and during some weekends if required to ensure that work is completed in line with the proposed schedule.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times and cyclists may be asked to dismount.

Emergency services are aware of the planned closure and access will be facilitated if there is an emergency on Station Road. They are also aware of the diversion arrangements in place for emergency vehicles to follow for the duration of the scheme.

Roadworks, closures and diversions are displayed online on our roadworks map.
