Chelford Road, Prestbury -partial culvert collapse

Following a partial culvert collapse and failure of a small section of carriageway on Chelford Road, Prestbury, south of the junction with Castle Hill / The Village Prestbury, a road closure is currently in place until repair works are completed.

Partial culvert collapse

What is happening?

Following investigation works into the carriageway failure, a further defect has been identified. This will be repaired before it impacts the roads condition. Works will be phased to ensure that private access is maintained at all times.

The investigation works that were completed in February identified:

  • the manhole support in the centre of the collapsed area has failed and is restricting the flow of the culvert
  • the stone slab downstream of the manhole has failed, with 2 electricity ducts and a water main located in the gap
  • the culvert ground support has failed upstream of the manhole, allowing water to flow outside of the culvert line, washing out beneath the carriageway

During a further investigation that took place in March, another manhole had partially collapsed which is diverting the flow of the water.

Repair works are due to start on Monday 14 April 2025 and are expected to take 2 weeks under a road closure. Providing there are no delays or additional problems discovered on site, the road is expected to reopen at the end of April 2025.

We will provide updates to the public on this webpage and via our highways X account @CECHighways as soon as more information becomes available following the completion of the necessary investigatory works.
