Mill House Bridge A523, Adlington
A523 Mill House Bridge, between Adlington and Macclesfield
Following a bridge inspection on Mill House Bridge, Adlington, we needed to undertake comprehensive repairs to a collapsed section of the arch that provided support to the southbound traffic lane.
The bridge arch has now been reconstructed which has allowed us to remove the emergency temporary traffic signals.
When the work is happening
Works started on 17 June 2025 and were completed on 19 December 2025.
We’ve identified additional works that can be carried out without the need for traffic signals. With the dam, site compound, and Environment Agency agreement already in place - we’ve secured the landowner’s permission to proceed immediately.
Completing these works now will enable Mill House Bridge to reopen to abnormal vehicles (oversized or overweight), helping to ease pressure on other parts of the network.
Our operatives will be working below the bridge and may not be visible.
A huge amount of work goes into making the site safe, secure, and ready. This timelapse shows the essential groundwork - from creating a safe working environment to ensuring the longevity of the repair.
Highways improvement works
Now, the council's highways team can work alongside Cadent Gas, who are carrying out their own essential maintenance. While Cadent’s works are not part of this repair, we have worked with them to ensure a smooth transition between phases.
Highway improvements will take place alongside Cadent Gas’ works. These include signage updates, surface patching, line reinstatement, and vegetation clearance to improve safety.
These works require bespoke traffic management arrangements and could not have been carried out under the previous two-way traffic light system on the A523 London Road.
