Mill House Bridge A523, Adlington
A523 Mill House Bridge, between Adlington and Macclesfield
Following a bridge inspection on Mill House Bridge, Adlington, we need to undertake comprehensive repairs to a collapsed section of the arch that provided support to the southbound traffic lane.
Emergency temporary traffic signals will remain in place between the London Road junction and Hole House Lane until the bridge has been reconstructed and strengthened.
When the work is happening
Work started on 17 June 2025 and will take approximately 19 weeks to complete. Our operatives will be working below the bridge and may not be visible.
The bridge has been stitched, and the surrounding north-south retaining walls have been reinforced to facilitate the repair work beneath. Foundation underpinning and ground stabilisation are currently underway. Once these are complete, restoration of the arch will commence.
Two-way temporary traffic signals remain in place, however we are prioritising works to remove the temporary traffic signals before the scheme's completion.
We appreciate the significance of this key part of the borough's road network, and we've committed full resources to ensure the work is finished as quickly as possible.
Highways improvement works
Once bridge repairs are complete, we will temporarily leave the site to allow Cadent Gas to carry out essential maintenance on their network. These gas works are entirely separate from the bridge repairs.
Following Cadent’s completion, we will return to undertake a series of highway improvements, including updating signage, repairing the carriageway, rebuilding the carriageway retaining wall, and clearing vegetation both overhead and along the footway.
At this stage, we do not have confirmed dates or durations for Cadent’s works. However, we anticipate that our highway improvement works will take approximately 5 days to complete. A more detailed programme will be shared once available.
Please note that these works require bespoke traffic management arrangements and cannot be carried out under the current two-way traffic light system on the A523 London Road.
