Work Experience- July 2024

My name is Daniel, and I have visited from The Whitby High School on my work experience, to gain knowledge about how different departments work with ICT on a day to day basis.

Monday

On my first day, I was introduced to the staff in the office, and was given a tour as well as being given my equipment which I was using for the week. This included my own personal laptop, charger, folder and headset.

In the afternoon I started work on my own separate Halo task, and began to log information on where there were gaps in the service base articles and knowledge base articles on an Excel document, ready so that I can present my findings at the end of the week. Following this I met with the financial apps team, and got to see what they do each day as well as the different applications and software that they support.

Tuesday

On my second day I started the morning with meeting the Tech Desktop team. From this session I learned about how they deal with user issues and how they implement regular Microsoft upgrades to the systems.

In the afternoon I met with an ICT services Architect and learnt about how they plan out for upcoming projects as well as getting to gain knowledge about certain fields such as databases. Following this I had a call with the digital team as well as a call with the ICT service desk manager.

Wednesday

On Wednesday I spent the day at Kelly House data centre with Sec Ops and the network team and learnt about how they deal with cyberattacks and got a tour around the site in which I was able to see the different server rooms, as well as backup generators and safety systems.

After this I continued my work on the Halo task

Thursday

On Thursday I spent the day in the IT department at Ellesmere Port Library and learnt how to build a laptop as well as repairing them.

In my meantime, I spent time on the learning lounge, gaining knowledge about GDPR, protecting information, information security, and record management. I also spent further time on my Halo task gathering more information and knowledge about where gaps exist.

Friday

On Friday, I spent the first hour continuing my research on the Halo task. After this I had a call with Nickki Hughes about website management. Here I leant about how documents are edited and managed so that users can get information efficiently. I also learnt about how accessibility is crucial for users and this can have a strong impact on reputation if not managed properly.

Finally in the afternoon, I submitted my independent research task to Huw so that he can go over and review where the gaps are, and work on filling them.

Summary

I have enjoyed my week here as I have found it very interesting to learn about how important each role is in maintaining and protecting the council. I particularly enjoyed my day at Kelly House as I found the tour really intriguing.

I would definitely recommend this experience to other students who are interested in IT, as you get to learn lots of new things, as well a processes.
