West Street, Crewe – Highway improvements

We are carrying out highway improvement works on West Street in Crewe, from Dunwoody Way to High Town to introduce measures to improve safety and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

The works are part of the Safer Roads Funds which is for road safety improvement schemes to reduce the number and severity of fatal and serious injury collisions on the 50 highest risk road sections in England. The level of risk is based on the Road Safety Foundation's analysis and report on road safety nationally.

What is happening

We will be undertaking the following works:

  • Upgrading the existing zebra crossing between Dewes Street and Rigg Street
  • Resurfacing sections of the carriageway
  • Installing raised tables on West Street at the junctions with Derby Street and Ford Lane
  • Relocating and improving the visibility of the existing uncontrolled crossing points
  • Installing speed cushions on West Street
  • Refreshing the road markings

We acknowledge that there is never a right time to carry out extensive road works and drivers are advised to plan their journey in advance and follow the diversion routes. These works have been scheduled and sequenced to minimise disruption as much as possible. All businesses affected have either already been informed or will be informed ahead of the works starting.

While it is inevitable there will be some disruption, the council will ensure that the works are carefully managed and coordinated to minimise delays as much as possible and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience. We ask drivers to be patient and plan ahead.
