A536 Gawsworth crossroads improvements

We are installing traffic signals and resurfacing the road on the A536 Gawsworth crossroads to improve road safety and the condition of the road. The new traffic signals will be installed on the junction of Dark Lane / Church Lane / A536 in Gawsworth.

The scheme is part of the Department for Transport Safer Roads Fund following a successful bid by Cheshire East Council. The fund is for road safety improvement schemes to reduce the number and severity of fatal and serious injury collisions on the 50 highest risk road sections in England. The level of risk is based on the Road Safety Foundation's analysis on road safety nationally.

When and what is happening

Works to deliver these road safety improvements began on 26 October 2024, and will take approximately 6 weeks to complete. The duration of the works is to allow for phasing to help to facilitate access to businesses and residents.

The following works will take place:

  • Installation of the new traffic signals including pedestrian crossing facilities on the A536 and Church Lane
  • Installation of street lighting
  • Road resurfacing and improvement works
  • New road markings
  • Relocation of a bus stop
  • Changes to kerbing
  • New traffic signs
  • Footway maintenance works

The new traffic signals will include detection equipment that will monitor the best traffic flows. They will give cyclists on Dark Lane and Church Lane an early start ahead of motor vehicles, allowing them to gain precedence over motorists.

The traffic signals will include a pedestrian crossing over the A536, to provide better access to the northbound bus stop (heading towards Macclesfield). We will also be installing new dropped kerbs on Church Lane, to provide a pedestrian crossing point over Church Lane.

We will be relocating the southbound bus stop (heading towards Congleton) away from the junction to a new location near Forge Close. This is to ensure vehicles following a bus don’t block the crossroads.

Street lighting will be extended along all approaches to the junction, to ensure pedestrians crossing the A536 can be clearly seen.

The footways along both sides of the A536 between the crossroads and just beyond Forge Close will be improved with some areas resurfaced and others cleared of overgrown vegetation.

These works will be carried out in phases, as detailed in the table below:

Road closure and diversion routes

Under current Health & Safety legislation and for the safety of our workforce and members of the public, it will be necessary for road closures and temporary traffic signals to be in place during these works.

The scheme will be carried out under a series of road closures and temporary traffic signals. A full breakdown of the closures and traffic management will be added here ahead of the scheme commencing once we have finalised details of our schedule.  We will be working during the day on all weekdays and during some weekends where required, to ensure that work is completed in line with the proposed schedule and to minimise disruption.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times and cyclists may be asked to dismount.

Emergency services are aware of the planned closure and access will be facilitated wherever possible.

Roadworks, closures and diversions are displayed online on our roadworks map at one.network
