Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015 requires private landlords must to make sure their rental properties have working smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarms installed.
Visit Gov.UK for the Guidance for landlords and tenants on the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Regulations.
Alarms
Smoke alarms are required on every storey of the premises where living accommodation is provided (for example, if the living accommodation is a flat above a shop, a smoke alarm is required on all levels).
Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed in every room that contains a gas fire, gas wall heater, gas central heating boiler, open fire or a solid fuel burner.
Failure to comply with this legislation may lead to landlords being issued with a fixed penalty fine of up to £5,000.
