Dementia

Local dementia support services

Lifestyle on Prescription aims to encourage lifestyle changes, showing that common conditions can be improved through behaviour changes.

This is a condition which typically affects older people though in some cases can affect younger people too. It occurs when the brain stops working in certain areas which in turn affects a person’s ability to remember, process information and even speak.

Memory loss is usually the first to be affected and this is when it is important to seek help and support should you be concerned. Other symptoms can include:

  • Confusion
  • Difficulties with communication
  • Repeating things
  • Sudden changes in mood and/or behaviour
  • Getting lost in places that used to be familiar
  • Struggling with decision making
  • Loss of interest in things that used to be enjoyable
  • Becoming withdrawn

There are over 200 types of dementia and although there is no known cure there is a lot of support out there should it be needed.

Always speak to your healthcare professional should you need a place to start. They may be able to offer you further guidance and talk about diagnosis should dementia be a concern.

There is more information on dementia from the NHS website. There are also a number of charities which can offer information and advice.
