Stroke

Lifestyle on Prescription aims to encourage lifestyle changes, showing that common conditions can be improved through behaviour changes.

Many people think that strokes only happen to older people, but stroke can strike anyone, at any time. One in four strokes in the UK happens to people of working age.

A stroke happens when blood supply is cut off to the brain.  This can cause damage which can affect how your body works.  It can also have an impact on your thoughts and how you feel.  A stroke can be life-changing so it is important to know the signs and symptoms of a stroke.  The FAST acronym (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) is a test to quickly identify if someone is having a stroke.

  • Face weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
  • Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms?
  • Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
  • Time to call 999: if you see any of these signs.

Manage your risk by managing your lifestyle. Keep yourself healthy through being active and eating a healthy diet. Quit smoking and keep an eye on your weight and alcohol intake.

Always attend your health checks and speak with your health professional should you have any concerns.
